Battles and Leaders of the Civil War: Struggle Intensifies
Published in Hardcover by Castle (May, 1990)
Author: Robert Underwood Johnson
Average review score:

Battles & Leaders of the Civil War: The Struggle Intensifies
Battles and Leaders of the Civil War: The Struggle Intensifies is the second installment of a four volume set about the Civil War written by eyewitnesses to the battles described. This series opened with "The Opening Battles," this volume is "The Struggle Intensifies," next is "The Tide Shifts," and the final volume is "Retreat with Honor." As with the first volume, the second has well written accounts of the battles fought as it opens with the capture of Fort Pulaski, Georgia and next with New Orleans.

We begin to see the strategy emerge as point and counterpoint in these battles play out. There is a summary of why there were operations in the far Southwest along with accounts of the Virginia battles of Yorktown and Williamsburg, but there is more as the Peninsular Campaign intensifies. The second battle of Bull Run is well represented here and there are excellent maps, charts, and engravings by the most prominent artists of that era. This said, you'll find that reading these very interesting accounts will bring emotions to the forefront, just as these men were experiencing them first hand. Acoounts of both view points are presented... South and North are fairly represented.

I found that Brigadier-General John D. Imboden, C.S.A. as he relates Stonewall Jackson's accounts in the Shenandoah to be priceless giving this volume balance. And of course there is Lee's campaign opposing Pope which is enlightening to say the least.

If you read about the Civil War, this series of books is a must for your library and is ideal for reference when reading other works about this tumultuous time in our history. These volumes are recognized as an outstanding account of the history of this war that writer use for reference... now you can read what that person wrote about his account first hand.

Fantastic Book!
This volume (#2) is one of a four volume set - and each is invaluable to understanding what really happened during the various campaigns. The books are a compilation of articles and letters first published in "Century" magazine in the 1870's and 1880's by the editors of that same magazine. In addition, there are numerous DETAILED maps - even down to the placement of individual artillery batteries, photographs, and sketches from the time. Further, the editors have numerous footnotes, which are extremely helpful in presenting evidence and/or additional information concerning events. The articles were all written by men, generals and privates alike, who were there, who took part. This is source material, the unvarnished truth as they saw it. It is sometimes serious, sometimes poetic, sometimes even humorous, yet always extremely interesting. One caution: Ned Bradford's book of the same name is a CONDENSED version of these 4 volumes and is a very poor substitute for this 4-volume set. As a Civil War "buff" of 25 years, I consider this some of the best reading I have ever come across. (If you ever visit a particular battlefield, these books are the only ones you will need to bring along.) This series of 4 books is something that you will read with delight - and refer to again and again.

Great Book of a 4 Volumes Set
I have the 1956 version of this book called, "Battles and Leaders of the Civil War: North to Antietam" - one of the most captivating books on the Civil War that I have ever read. This book is simply the lastest publication of the same book. The book, one of a 4-volume set, is composed of articles and letters published in "The Century Magazine" from 1865 to about 1885 - all by Civil War participants (mostly generals, with the occasional private, colonel, major mixed in). Through their eyes you get the battle as they saw it: "close up and personal". The editors (who were also the editors of "The Century Magazine" in the 1880's) have extensive footnotes to clarify and/or correct information in the authors' articles, plus numerous maps and photographs of the scenes (in the 1860's and 1880's). The maps are invaluable to the reader, showing in great detail the positions of even regiments and artillary batteries. This information proved most useful when I recently visited the South Mountain and Antietam battlefields in person. Using the maps I could pinpoint and follow troop movements with little or no guess-work. This book is a great reference and a fun read. It is full of "what happened", not "what should/might/could have happened"; and, as such, it is most refreshing. (I might add that some parts are actually entertaining and often very amusing.) I recommmend it most highly. P.S.S, Millbury, Mass.

Berber: A Lamb's Tale
Published in Hardcover by Wateroak Publishing (December, 1999)
Author: Margaret Anderson Johnson
Average review score:

Entertaining, inspiring, highly recommended reading.
Berber is an orphaned lamb who thinks he is 'human" because his adoptive-mother is human and has white hair just like his wool coat. Berber: A Lamb's Tale is an utterly charming and original story told from Berber's point-of-view and details his many escapades with the other farm creatures. Margaret Johnson, drawing upon her many years of raising all manner of animals, has written an entertaining, inspiring, highly recommended story for young readers that is enhanced throughout with full-color illustrations.

Absolutely Precious
Berber is absolutely precious. This is a childs book that adults can enjoy. You will read it over and over to your children.

It's a hit!
I absolutely loved this book. It is a great story for children, but one that the adults will love to read to them. (and after they go to bed read it to themselves). Margaret clearly loves and understands animals, and has a lot to share about them. Especially enjoyable is how she tells the story from the lamb's view, and you know, I think she did know exactly what the lamb was thinking. It's a great story with a great message and I hope that many more people have a chance to read it. ADD IT TO YOUR SHOPPING CART!

Big Mama's Old Black Pot

closest thing to grandma's kitchen
When my grandmother died she took her recipes to the grave with her. This book is the closest I've come to recreating her food. I've used recipes for birthday's, Christmas, and family reunions and I've never failed yet following the instructions. Big Mama is folklore, it's a family history and it's divine food.

Real Life Southern Recipes
One of my grandmother's died 15 years ago at age 75 and another just a year ago at age 97. There are recipes in this book almost identical to those they used during their cooking days. This book is wonderful because it actually contains the recipes that they never got around to writing down or had jotted down on a notecard and put in a bible. The recipes may have different names but they have the same rich flavor. I throw out the diet and delight my family with recipes from The Black Pot at every gathering. My dad loves it because it reminds him when...

Just like home
I love this cookbook! The recipes are just like grandma and great-grandma used. Being from the south I could really relate to this. It's the best southern country cookbook I have found yet! Signed, Mississippi

Great for a Blue Lover's Birthday
I got this for my little boy's 3rd birthday. He loves Blue, and loved this book. We read it every night, and every night he loves to find Blue's clues and show me all the things he remembered about the story.
Great buy!!!

Blue's Big Birthday Party
This was our first "Blues Clues" book. My children love it.. My 4 year old, enjoys searching for the clues with his own handy dandy notebook, while my 1 1/2 year old enjoys identifying the items in the book, such as balloon, spoon, Blue, etc. It is colorful and well detailed.

Fantastic
Children love Blue and Steve! Transfering that enthusiasm to books is a wonderful thing.Keeping our kids excited about reading should be a #1 priority.

INFANT BOOK
I THINK THAT THIS IS A GREAT FIRST BOOK FOR A CHILD. IT IS DURABLE AND EASY TO READ. MORE BOOKS LIKE THIS NEED TO BE OUT THERE. MY KIDS BOTH LOVE BLUES CLUES AND I AM REALLY GLAD THAT THESE ARE AVILABLE FOR THEM.

In or Out of the Bath - this book is tops!
My child has really enjoyed "reading" this book along with me! Although my twenty month old already knows most of her body parts, she has fun naming and picking them out on Blue. The illustrations are simple, yet interesting and the part of Blue that you are to name dominates the picture to give your child a "clue" as to which body part to name. This is a great way for children to learn sequencing as they wash each of their body parts while following along in the book. This is sure to be a favorite!

Thanks Blue!!!
I can't tell you how many times after we finish Blue's bath and turn the last page that I hear "Read it again Mommy". The children love to name all of Blue's Body parts as they help me read this cute little bathtime story. It's the perfect book to take in the bathtub, or give to a baby. The waterproof pages have stood the test of time. Keep up the great work!!

excellent, charming and well written.
I thought this book was delightful. I gave it as a gift to my friends 4 year old granddaughter who is not very interested in books and she sat still the whole time my daughter read it to her!

Good Reviews that should be read!
Hey! I just found these great reviews. Why haven't you run these next to the grumpy one? <>

A sweet story my toddler loves!
A charming look at a day in the life of a busy toddler, from waking to bedtime with many adventures in between. My two year old loves the rhyming and the sweet illustrations. A great bedtime story, too.

BROTHERS ON THE MEND
Published in Hardcover by Pocket Star (February, 1998)
Author: Ernest Johnson
Average review score:

a must read for people of any color
by no means are Dr. Johnson's ideas new but they are very good and written out in good detail. This is a very good book to read not only to mend but to learn something more about oneself.

Very solution focused
I was very impressed with this book. I wished someone had written something of this nature ten years earlier. It should be used a very helpful instruction guide.

Excellent book, not just for African Americans, but all race
Dr. Johnsons book Brothers of the Mend is an excellent book for understanding and healing anger, but not just for African Americans, for anyone who needs to find the solution to their problem rather than being the problem. It is very true that it does not matter how much eduction a black man has, where he went to college, or how much fame and fortune he has attained, he can expect to suffer some injustices in his life based entirely on the color of his skin. This situation, regardless of how it manifests, cannot help but cause him to be angry. For many different reasons. The good part about reading the book is that in it you find strategies for stopping the anger before it starts or before it gets the best of you. Brothers on the Mend is excellent, it gives you step by step simple techniques to stop anger before it takes control. By reading this book I have learned some quick methods to defuse anger, one in particular I've grown to love is taking a time out, this especially works for my children. As a child growing up in a single parent household with a mother working several jobs to make ends meet, patience was not one of her agenda. The meditation and relaxation techniques are particularly useful in relieving tension after a long day of working with hyper active children. Brothers on the Mend, made me take time out to re-evaluate myself and look my past experiences from a different stand point. To sum it up. I loved the book and I truely enjoyed reading it. I give it 5 stars and a plus.

Calculus AB and BC (Cliffs AP)
Published in Paperback by Cliffs Notes (May, 2001)
Authors: Kerry J. King and Dale W. Johnson
Average review score:

Great for all year studying
This is yet another great Cliffs AP prep book. I used it only for the AB sections. I bought the book early in the school year and really only used it in preparing for my tests. If you practice everything along the way, there is really no need to use it in May for cramming. In May I would do a couple of free responses from previous AP exams, review your integral equations for finding volumes, and make sure you know all you derivatives and integrals (but you already knew that.) I made a 5, and I'm sure you will too if you prepare along the way and do some practice free responses. I would probably either get the Barron's or the Princeton Review if you plan on self studying for the BC, though.

Comprehensive Review
This book is fantastic and should be called "Comprehensive Review to Calculus." I loved this book because it teaches you exactly how to do things and followed by sample problems. Everything is laid out in perfect order and easy to follow. Don't take the class, just read this book and practice!

AP Calculus AB and BC!!!!
This book does a great job introducing the "Algebra 1" of advanced mathematics, Calculus. I've always loved Calculus and its creaters, Newton and Leibniz. If you're taking AP Calculus, AB or BC, you should definately consider buying this incredible book. I especially like how the book introduces the definate integral by first computing one using Reimann Sums.

Campfire and Battlefield: An Illustrated History of the Campaigns and Conflicts of the Great Civil War
Published in Hardcover by Trident Press International (December, 1999)
Authors: Rossiter Johnson and John Tyler Morgan

I have the original....
I have the original 1894 version of this book and have enjoyed it for many years. The perspective of battles is fresh in comparison to the history books of today. There is so much more in this book, the engravings and pictures are wonderful. I would highly recommend even a copy.

Stunning clarity, written with clear memory of the war
This review comes from a reading of the original 1894 edition. Filled with many obscure and forgotten details, this book is a treasure for Civil War historians. Songs, complete with full lyrics, as well as specific orders of battle give this reading a timely presence. Written in the traditional language of the era, the events have a kind of realism that brings you face to face with history. Originally this volume was sold by subscription only @ N.Y. BY KNIGHT AND BROWN. After having this book in my possession for many years it is very exciting to see that it has been reprinted at long last.

Campfire and Battlefield
The Civil War was the most important conflict the U.S. has ever been involved in, bar none. The military, ethical, and governmental consequences have been enormous. Campfire & Battlefield gives us a unique perspective of this great event.

Casualties of Progress : Personal Histories from the Chemically Sensitive
Published in Paperback by MCS Information Exchange (13 January, 2000)
Author: Alison Johnson
Average review score:

just the beginning ...
Incredible book, incredible research, incredible stories, incredible people. The suffering these people have endured is well communicated in this simple book. It seems that no reader could walk away from this book without understanding the kind of hell that persons with MCS endure. Indeed, the social discomfort of people not understanding can be worse than the physical issues. Besides allowing the reader to bear necessary witness to the souls presented, this book can help those with similar problems feel less alone. It showed me that what I have been through with sensitivities is not unique, and that I am part of a larger picture; one that I believe will, sadly, only get bigger. Maybe some more eyes can be opened in time. If I had read these stories before I became so sensitized, I might have been able to avoid it. At least I would have had knowledge. (How? The patterns are fairly recognizable. In hindsight, it seems that with awareness and action, my path could easily have been altered.) In many people's reality, ignorance did not bring bliss, but MCS. Thank god for the work of Alison Johnson. May the knowledge spread, not the pain.

credible accounts from diverse people
Very compelling, fascinating and alarming. Ought to be a wake up call to our society that something quite new and dangerous is happening in the environment -- and in the bodies of these chemically-injured people.

A must read for ALL medical professionals
CASUALTIES OF PROGRESS: Personal Histories from the Chemically Sensitive. Editor Alison Johnson included over 50 stories written by people whose lives have drastically been changed due to an overload of chemicals in their lives. When you read the book, you will find a "connection" and hopefully learn from it and change your own life before the damage is done to you. We live in a chemical world now...from the synthetic perfumes we use to the spraying of insecticides in our homes to rid of bugs. The stories in the book (which are real) will give one with an open mind the picture that maybe we are all slowly poisoning ourselves. The proof? Well, don't rely on the medical books just yet...they are not that far advanced (notice they haven't found the cause of gulf war illness yet?). In Alison Johnson's book you will read about symptoms coming from those now chemically sensitive (in most cases because of a known chemical over-exposure). It doesn't take a medical degree to see how these people react from the same chemicals (perfumes, cleaning agents, diesel exhaust, magic markers, pesticides, fabric softeners, etc.). It can't be a "coincidence" that these people all suffer the same similiar type of symptoms (headaches, shortness of breath, blurred vision, experience unsteady gait, chest pain, confusion, etc.) Yet the medical profession claims multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) to be a "controversial" illness. Or at these they have in the past. But as more and more become sensitive to every day chemicals that didn't bother them before, more and more research is being done. This is an excellent, informative book with personal stories being shared so that YOU, the reader, will become better educated about the chemicals you expose yourself daily not realizing how in the long-term they can cause problems. It'll be the best $14 investment you've ever made!
